June 15, 2026 :Why Scalp Health Is the Foundation of Healthy Hair

As a hairstylist for over 17 years, I've spent countless hours helping clients achieve their hair goals. Whether it's extensions, blonding, color transformations, or simply helping someone feel confident again, one thing I've learned is that healthy hair starts long before we see it growing from the scalp.

For years, I focused primarily on the hair itself. But over time, both through my professional experience and my own personal journey, I realized that the scalp is truly the foundation of everything. Just like a healthy garden needs healthy soil, healthy hair needs a healthy scalp.

This became even more important to me personally over the last few years. Between multiple surgeries, hormonal changes, perimenopause, and now surgical menopause, I've experienced firsthand what so many women struggle with—changes in hair texture, increased shedding, dryness, and feeling like your hair just isn't the same as it used to be. As someone who has worn extensions for years and built a career around beautiful hair, it was frustrating and emotional to watch my own hair change.

Those experiences pushed me to learn more about scalp health and wellness. I began looking beyond traditional haircare and focusing on what was happening at the root of the problem. What I discovered is that many people spend hundreds of dollars on products to treat the symptoms while completely overlooking the health of their scalp.

Your scalp is living skin. It contains thousands of hair follicles, oil glands, and blood vessels that work together to create the environment where your hair grows. When the scalp becomes imbalanced from buildup, dryness, stress, hormonal changes, environmental factors, or harsh products, it can affect how your hair looks and feels.

I see it every day in my chair. Clients come in complaining about hair that feels dull, dry, oily, lifeless, or difficult to manage. Many are experiencing increased shedding or changes they can't quite explain. Often, when we start talking about their scalp health, everything begins to make sense.

One of the biggest things I've learned is that scalp care is self-care. Taking time to care for your scalp isn't just about your hair. It's about slowing down, reducing stress, improving circulation, and creating a healthier foundation overall. That's one of the reasons I became so passionate about scalp wellness and eventually co-created The Crown Lounge & Beard Revival.

We wanted to create an experience that goes beyond traditional salon services. A place where people can relax, reset, and focus on wellness while also supporting the health of their hair and scalp. Our head spa experiences combine scalp-focused treatments with relaxation and wellness therapies because I believe beauty and wellness go hand in hand.

I also became passionate about using cleaner products. My clean beauty journey originally started because of my son, and over the years it has completely changed the way I look at ingredients. Today, I choose products that support both scalp health and overall wellness because what we put on our bodies matters just as much as what we put in them.

If there is one thing I hope my clients take away from this, it's that healthy hair is not just about finding the right haircut, color, or styling routine. It's about creating a healthy foundation. When you focus on scalp health, you're giving your hair the best possible opportunity to thrive.

Whether you're experiencing dryness, buildup, thinning, shedding, or simply want healthier-looking hair, don't overlook your scalp. It may be the missing piece of the puzzle.

After nearly two decades behind the chair and navigating my own hair journey, I can confidently say that some of the biggest transformations I've seen begin with the scalp.

Healthy hair starts at the root—and that root begins with a healthy scalp.
